From Crystals to Crustal?Scale Seismic Anisotropy: Bridging the Gap Between Rocks and Seismic Studies With Digital Geologic Map Data in Colorado

چکیده

Deep continental crustal structures are enigmatic due to lack of direct exposures and limited tools investigate them remotely. Seismic waves can sample these rocks, but most seismic methods focus on coarse while laboratory measurements concentrate crystal-scale rock properties, little work has been conducted bridge this interpretation gap. In some places, geologic maps crystalline basement provide samples the intermediate-scale fabrics that may represent in situ deep crust. However, previous research not considered natural geometric variations from map data, nor is heterogeneity typically included map-scale property calculations. Here, we test how influence anisotropy Colorado by analyzing structural data maps, combining those with bulk elastic tensors calculate evaluating resulting comparisons observed receiver function A1 (360° periodic) arrivals. Crystalline fabrics, predicted tectonic positively correlate shallow Additionally, widespread correlations occur between mapped fault traces regional foliations, implying preexisting mechanical have strongly influenced subsequent reactivation. We interpret various contact types (e.g., lithologic structural) generate arrivals multiple parallel features faults, intrusions) contribute a seismically visible grain. Therefore, Colorado's exhumed basement, as expressed outcrops offers insight into modern geological geophysical structure.

Estimating the boundary surface between geologic formations from 3D seismic data using neural networks and geostatistics

The exact locations of horizons that separate geologic sequences are known only at physically sampled locations (e.g., borehole intersections), which, in general, are very sparse. 3D seismic data, on the other hand, provide complete coverage of a volume of interest with the possibility of detecting the boundaries between formations with, for example, contrasted acoustic impedance. Detection of ...

Geologic Constraints on Seismic Inversion

Velocity model estimation from seismic data using prestack depth migration is an un-derdetermined problem: there are many subtly diierent models which are not kinematically equivalent. As these models can give rise to dramatically diierent interpretations and decisions there is a clear need for a selection criterion in order to choose the "best" (i.e. geologically most plausible) one. Interpret...

Geologic Applications of Seismic Scattering

Once disregarded as noise, scattered seismic waves are finding increasing application in subsurface imaging. This sea change is driven by the increasing density and quality of seismic recordings and advances in waveform modeling which, together, are allowing seismologists to exploit their unique properties. In addition to extensive application in the energy exploration industry, seismic scatter...

Estimation of anisotropy parameters in application to Blackfoot seismic data

Anisotropy parameters are obtained by anisotropic velocity analysis performed on Blackfoot P-wave reflection-seismic data, in combination with sonic-log data. First, the line was processed with ProMAX seismic data-processing software using a sequence of conventional algorithms without taking anisotropy into account, in order to choose proper analysis points and horizons with confidence. Then, a...

Constraints on Subduction Geodynamics from Seismic Anisotropy

[1] Much progress has been made over the past several decades in delineating the structure of subducting slabs, but several key aspects of their dynamics remain poorly constrained. Major unsolved problems in subduction geodynamics include those related to mantle wedge viscosity and rheology, slab hydration and dehydration, mechanical coupling between slabs and the ambient mantle, the geometry o...
